The 37th president of the United States, Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9, 1913 – April 22, 1994), presided over the country from 1969 to 1974. He was a Republican who had previously represented and represented California in the Senate. From 1953 to 1961, he served as President Dwight D. Eisenhower's 36th vice president. During his five years in office, the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War was reduced, relations with the Soviet Union and China were normalized, the first manned Moon landings took place, and the Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration were established. Nixon became the only president to resign from office in the wake of the Watergate crisis, ending his second term early.
