W. Somerset Maugham was the British author who served as a spy in the secret intelligence service and was tasked with trying to keep the Russians from pulling out of world war I.
Known for his plays, novels, and short tales, William Somerset Maugham (25 January 1874 - 16 December 1965) was an English author. Maugham attended a German university after finishing his education in England. He was born in Paris and lived there for his first 10 years. In London, he enrolled as a medical student, and in 1897, he earned his medical degree. He stopped practicing medicine and switched to writing full-time. Though Liza of Lambeth (1897), his debut book and a study of life in the slums, garnered attention, he first rose to national fame as a playwright. By 1908, he had four plays running concurrently in London's West End. Maugham served in the British Secret Service during World War One.
