Schizophrenia has no known treatment. Fortunately, there are effective therapies that can lessen symptoms, lower the risk of new psychotic episodes, shorten the length of psychotic episodes, and generally give most people with schizophrenia the chance to live more fulfilling and productive lives. Schizophrenic people can live and operate rather well in society with the right drugs and encouraging counseling. These patients have a positive prognosis. About half of those with schizophrenia are either acknowledged to have fully recovered or to have made progress toward being able to function independently ten years following initial diagnosis. A further 15% are unimproved and frequently require hospitalization, while 25% are improved but need a strong support system.
