a comet (which broke into more than 20 pieces) hit the planet Jupiter in 1994 shows that impacts continue to happen in our solar system even today.

Our solar system is nestled in the outer spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune; Pluto and other minor planets; dozens of moons; and millions of asteroids, comets, and meteoroids together make up our solar system, which orbits our star, the Sun.

Extending far beyond our own solar system, there are many more planets than stars. Planets orbiting other stars in the Milky Way have been detected by us by the thousands, and we expect to find more in the future. The Milky Way is just one of potentially a hundred billion galaxies in the cosmos, and most of its hundreds of billions of stars are estimated to have their own planets.

Even though Earth is but a pinprick in the vastness of space, we are far from alone. The universe appears to be teeming with planetary systems, a vast network of innumerable stars accompanied by groups of objects, some of which may harbor independent life.
