For every 5 days, the plaster casts should change for a newborn baby to have talipes.
Talipes (also called clubfoot) is where a baby is born with a foot that turns in and under. This happens because the Achilles tendon is too short. There are two types of clubfoot:
Treatment for clubfoot starts 1 to 2 weeks after the baby is born. The main treatment, called the Ponseti method, involves gene manipulation and stretching the baby's foot into a better position. It's then put into a cast. This is repeated every week for about 5 to 8 weeks. After the last cast comes off, most babies need a minor operation with a local anesthetic to loosen the Achilles tendon at the back of their ankle. It helps to release their feet into a more natural position.
