Bony and cartilaginous material that forms a connecting bridge over a bone fracture during repair is called callus, often spelled callous, in osteology. The fracture site develops a temporary callus within one to two weeks of the incident. Bone-making cells called osteoblasts multiply quickly in the periosteum (the layer of the bone where new bone is made), producing collars around the ends of fractures that grow inward to join the pieces. As the cartilage is steadily reabsorbed and replaced by bone tissue, the definitive callus develops. Strong bony extensions join the shattered bone ends two to three weeks after the injury, and the organized aspect of bone progressively returns. Over the course of several months to years, the callus is resorbed.
