Mae Carol Jemison, an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut, was born on October 17, 1956. When she worked as a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Endeavour, she became the first black woman to visit space. Jemison entered the NASA astronaut corps in 1987 and was chosen to fly on the STS-47 mission, which took place from September 12–20, 1992. During this mission, she orbited the Earth for almost eight days.
Jemison became the first African American woman in space on September 12, 1992, along with six other astronauts travelling on board the Endeavour for mission STS47. Jemison has won numerous prizes and been given honorary doctorates in honour of her achievements.
