The year 1540 marked the arrival of the first Spaniard settlers to present day New Mexico and hence the creation of Santa Fe. Their arrival can be explained below

Economic Precedence

The search for  the legend of the seven cities of gold was one of the driving factors that led Conquistador Francisco Vazquez de Coronado to journey to New Mexico  In the summer of 154 about 400 Spaniards soldiers and between 1,300 to 2,000 Indians.

 Juan de Oñate began the Spanish Colonization of New Mexico In 1598 and San Juan de los Caballeros was named its first capital. However, Governor Pedro de Peralta  founded Santa Fe in 1610, making it the new capital.

   One of the highlights of the colonization was that the Spaniard brought education to New Mexico and this was spearheaded by the Catholic missions. Catholic priests provided both spiritual welfare as well as taught the  Natives American in so many areas.
