The event that occurred which led to the United States declaring war on Spain was the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine at the Havana Harbor.
The American Public had been clamoring for war against Spain for many years as a result of the brutal way that the Spanish put down the independence movement of the Cubans. But because they could not go to war with Spain over how it treated its own colonies, they had no choice but to watch the events unfold.
A chance came in 1898 however, when the U.S.S. Maine sank in the Havana Harbor. U.S. Media used this as an excuse to rile up Americans by blaming the Spanish. American citizens then demanded that the nation go to war.
Congress and the President succumbed and the United States declared war on Spain, despite evidence that showed the sinking was an accident that had nothing to do with Spain as well as Spanish efforts to avoid war.
