Both nociceptor neurons and proprioception somatosensory neurons have a common Cell body located in the dorsal root ganglia.

Explain the functions of the dorsal root ganglion.

The dorsal root ganglion is formed as the dorsal root emerges from the intervertebral neural foramina (DRG).

  • The DRG is a collection of cell bodies that transmit sensory information from receptors such as thermoreceptors, nociceptors, proprioceptors, and chemoreceptors to the CNS for processing.
  • Its cell bodies are separated by layers of satellite glial cells (SGCs), which prevent somas from interacting with one another.

DRG neurons are classified as pseudo-unipolar neurons because they have one axon that splits into two independent branches, resulting in a distal and proximal process.

  • Action potentials generated by peripheral impulses do not necessarily have to travel via the DRG
  • They can potentially skip the DRG and proceed to the proximal process and spinal cord.
