When clients share their life stories with me, I learn so much about them. A reminiscence is a wonderful gift given to the nurse, offering a piece of oneself at a time when one may not have much else to say.
It also sheds light on the true identity of the person recounting the story. The best ways to encourage reminiscing are to listen without interrupting or criticizing, keep in mind that the client's memories are what matter, be patient with repetition because sometimes people need to tell the same story repeatedly to come to terms with the experience, especially if it was deeply meaningful to them, be alert for signs of depression in conversation (dwelling on depressing subjects), as well as changes in physical status or behavior, and offer appropriate support.
