What is the Pledge of Allegiance?

A patriotic verse known as the "Pledge of Allegiance" is recited by Americans as a pledge to the American flag and the country as a whole. When reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, one should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men should take off any non-religious headgear while not wearing a uniform by placing their right hand over their hearts and holding it at their left shoulder. People in uniform are expected to keep quiet, salute the troops, and face the flag. Veterans and members of the armed forces who are not wearing uniforms may salute in the same way as those who are.
