Your baby's mouth should be tickled with your nipple until she opens her lips wide. You should then softly grip your breast with your thumb above the areola and your fingers below. Then, give her a short cuddle to your breast. Not just your nipple itself, but areola as well, should be in her mouth. She will have full-appearing cheeks (as opposed to hollowed-out ones) and lengthy, slow jaw motions as she takes in the milk, and you will notice little movements in her temple, lower jaw, or ear. She'll probably swallow, and you'll hear it. If the latch is poor, gently insert your finger to break the seal she has formed around your nipple and try again.
