Smith v. Allwright was the case that struck down white-only primary elections as a violation of the fourteenth amendment to the u.s. constitution.

This case was a landmark decision by US supreme court associated with right to vote and racial desegregation. It changed the Texas state rule that allowed parties to make internal rules even regarding white primaries. Lonnie E. Smith, a black dentist  sued county election official S. S. Allwright for the right to vote in a primary election being conducted by the Democratic Party.The Supreme Court ruled that Texas was indeed defying Smith's Fifteenth Amendment right to vote, and his Fourteenth Amendment right to equal protection under the law.
