Loretta is dealing with non sui-cidal injury.

Nonsui-cidal self-injury (NSSI) is a baffling, troubling, and hard to treat phenomenon that has increased markedly in recent years. NSSI refers to the intentional destruction of one’s own body tissue. There is no intention of sui-cide especially for purposes not socially sanctioned.

Common ways of self-injury include cutting, burning, scratching,  or hitting, and most people who self-injure have used many of these methods. As NSSI is fundamentally associated with emotional and psychiatric distress, and because NSSI increases risk for sui-cide, it is crucial to establish accurate conceptual and clinical models of this behaviour.
