What is an insect?

An insect is an animal that known as arthropods which usually possess six joined appendege.

The main characteristics of the insects include the following:

  • They have jointed appendages as arthropods,

  • an exoskeleton (hard, external cover),

  • segmented body,

  • ventral nervous system,

  • digestive system,

  • open circulatory system, and

  • advanced sensory receptors.

The advanced sensory receptors are saturated at the antennas which helps the insects to detect smell.

Besides the use of antennas to detect smell, the insects can also use it for the following purposes:

  • They can use them to feel the surface of an object and sense if it's hot or cold,

  • They can use it to listen to sounds or detect the movement of air or wind
