Unlike an Executive Information System (EIS), a Decision Support System (DSS) helps managers understand problems and potential solutions by acquiring and analyzing information with sophisticated models.

The main difference between Executive Information System (EIS) and Decision Support System (DSS) is that the EIS allows senior managers to take decisions to meet the strategic goals of the organization while the DSS allows senior managers to take non-routine decisions through sophisticated models by acquiring and analyzing information.

A DSS is a computerized program used to support judgements, determinations, and courses of action in an organization or a business. A DSS sifts through and analyzes massive amounts of data, and compiles comprehensive information which is used to solve problems.

Hence, EIS is considered a specialized type of DSS.
