The nurse is preparing to assist a client with a cuffed tracheostomy tube to eat. what intervention is the priority before the client is permitted to drink or eat?

Respuesta :

The precautions to be taken are that the cuff should be inflated in order to avoid aspiration of food and fluids. Aspiration means when food or fluids enters our airway or lungs by mistake. This can cause several health issues. Also, the nurse should ensure that the tray is placed in a comfortable position. The head of the bed in which the client is should be elevated.

Aspiration may cause more problems for the client and this should be avoided at all costs. If the cuff is not inflated there will be a risk of aspiration. The position the client is also seated in while eating is also important. If the position of the client is not right it can lead to aspiration.

So the priority for the nurse is that she should see that the client is able to eat the food properly and this should not lead to more health problems.
