Amoebic Dysentery
Amoebic dysentery is an intestinal infection caused by a protozoan parasite called Entamoeba histolytica
Entamoeba histolytica is transmitted by the ingestion of amebic cysts through fecal-oral contact, usually through contaminated food or water sources.
There are two forms E. histolytica can take: the cyst form, which can survive in the environment for a prolonged period, and the trophozoite stage, which is the active and invasive form. After the ingestion of the cyst form, trophozoites can be formed, which can invade and penetrate intestinal mucosa destroying epithelial cells and inflammatory cells.
E. histolytica most commonly causes intestinal amoebiasis but can also affect the liver, respiratory tract, heart, and brain.
Amebic liver abscesses are the most common manifestation of extraintestinal amebiasis. Pleuropulmonary abscess, brain abscess, and necrotic lesions on the perianal skin and genitalia have also been observed.
Invasive amoebic dysentery is characterized by severe diarrhea, colitis, bloody mucus-containing stools, and pain; symptoms that match those seen in this patient.
Hence Amoebic dysentery is the protozoan disease responsible.
