- Alliances- In 1907, Britain, France, and Russia formed the "Triple Entente." The "Triple Alliance" was established simultaneously by Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary in 1882. Because of these affiliations, when war was proclaimed, Europe was divided into two armies. Franz Ferdinand was killed as a result of tension and antagonism between Serbia and Austria-Hungary brought on by the Treaty of Berlin, which was signed years earlier.
