Explain the steps involved in adding two rational expressions

In adding two rational expressions, we must sum up only the like terms. By that we mean to say that we can only do the operations to expressions with the same variables and the same exponents in each variables. We also take note of the signs of the numerical coefficient to better know whether to add them up or subtract.

The rational expression consists of numerator and/or denominator. Below are the few example of expression rational expression.

Example:

[tex]\frac{5}{y-4}[/tex], [tex]\frac{3x^2+2x+1}{10}[/tex], [tex]\frac{(x-2)^2}{3x}[/tex]

There two major steps involve adding rational expression.

The numerator can be simply added if the denominator is the same and then factorize the final answer if needed.
If the denominator is different then find the lowest common factor (LCM ) of the denominator and rewrite the rational expression with least common denominator.
