Something can be read without effort when the reader does not need to think too hard about the piece of literature you are reading. Obviously, the readers need to think about what they are reading, as you are always thinking. But to read without effort is to have the writing be so clear that the reader does not need to continually elaborate on what is written could mean. It's important in writing because without it, the reader may become confused and not enjoy what is written.
