Accidents occur frequently in homes and most are preventable. It is important to periodically check our homes for safety. Note the inventory list below and use it to safety check each room and try to correct them if possible. Check each item listed and indicate "yes," "no," or "corrected." Record the results of your safety check in the essay section below.

1. Are the lamp cords tidy? Excess cording should be twist-tied and tucked behind walkways to avoid people tripping over it.

2. Are the lamp shades stable and in fine working order? Any signs of scorching should alert you to possible danger. If signs of scorching, you should check bulbs and bulb size, you may have bulbs that are have too much wattage. Replace bulbs with a lower wattage. Replace lamp shade if it does not fit correctly.

3. Are area rugs placed on vinyl or wood flooring secured to safeguard against slipping and sliding? If not, it can be corrected by replacing with rugs with better backing material or buying a non-slip covering that may be placed under the rugs and is available at most department or hardware stores.

4. Are electrical outlets replaced if cracked, scorched or otherwise damaged? If not, talk to your parent or guardian about replacing them. Replacements can be purchased at any hardware store.

5. Do the unused electrical outlet covers have safety plugs to avoid small child electrocution? If not, these can be purchased at hardware stores.

6. Are appliance cords frayed or damaged? Or the plug-in for the appliance? If there is damage, you should talk to your parent or guardian about replacing the cord, plug-in, or the appliance.

7. Are all candles in containers or candleholders? If not, buy or find safe containers in the home that may be used to hold the candles.

8. Are all lights and candles set in spaces free from flammable materials? If not, move them to areas in your home that are safe or remove the flammable material.

9. Do bathtubs and showers have handles and tub stickers to prevent slippage? If not, these may be purchased at any home store or hardware store.

10. Are all tubs and showers free from electrical appliances? If not, remove the appliances and place in a safe place, far from any sources of water.

11. Are oil or chemical saturated rags and other flammable material stored away from heat sources? If not, place in safe areas and clean or dispose of any that are dirty, particularly if they have any type of chemicals, grease or oil on them.

12. Is the kitchen equipped with a fire extinguisher and smoke detector? If not, talk to parent or guardian to purchase both of these to place in kitchen area.

13. Are hallways and stairways clear of clutter and well lit? Clutter should be removed and if not well lit, talk to parent or guardian about placing more lights in these areas.

14. If you have a fireplace, is it covered with a sturdy screen? Is it cleaned regularly? If not, talk to parent or guardian about purchasing a sturdy screen and cleaning the fireplace.

15. Are pesticides, household cleaners, and other chemicals stored in a safe place out of the reach of children? If not, find a safe place to store these items or talk to parent or guardian about finding a safe place.

16. Are medications stored in a locked cabinet or in a safe place that is out of reach of children? If not, talk to parent about moving them to a more secure place.

17. Are guns and weapons stored in locked cabinets? if not, this should be corrected by an adult in the house and they should be placed in a locked cabinet.

18. If you have a pool, is it surrounded by a fence?

After completion of your checklist, write a 150 word summary that includes the hazards that you found in your home. State whether you were able to correct them and how you did this. Include in your essay the possible solutions for correcting hazards that you were unable to correct.
