To find the solution to a problem we must evaluate the advantages (benefits) and disadvantages (losses) that will result from our decision.
What is a problem?
A problem is a term to refer to an issue or question that must be solved or clarified that generally results in a difficulty or inconvenience in achieving an end.
When a person is involved in a problem, they have the possibility of solving it by making a decision about it. However, each action has different consequences (good or bad) that must be evaluated before making the decision.
For example: A man crashed his car into his neighbor's car (problem)
This man has several possibilities such as:
- Run away and deny that he was the one who crashed the car
Advantages: He won't have to repair his neighbor's car, so he won't spend any money.
Disadvantages: He is going to have to fix his car quickly to avoid suspicion from his neighbor.
- Taking the blame and paying for the damage to his neighbor's car.
Advantages: He will amicably solve the problem with his neighbor by taking all the blame and apologizing.
Disadvantage: He is going to have to spend more money to fix his car and his neighbor's car.
As we see in the previous example, a person has different decision options and these bring different advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, to make a good decision we must evaluate the consequences of our decisions.
