Answer:
Japan had been closed off from the rest of the world. They didn’t make contact with other countries and kept to themselves. So when the americans suddenly showed up and forced them to trade, that made them angry.
As for the domestic problems, they were very ethocentric already but this just mad them madder at other countries as they tried to isolate themselves further and they shunned any outsiders that came.
