you can eliminate the 'x' terms if you multiply the first equation by 3 and the second one by -4 to get:

  24x + 27y = -9

+ -24x - 28y = -4

add to get:

now find 'x':

8x + 9(13) = -3

8x + 117 = -3

8x = -120

x = -15
