A detergent is commonly used as a cleaning agent. Every detergent consists of a hydrophobic tail and a hydrophilic head. The hydrophilic head is capable of interaction with water hence the detergent can dissolve in water. Its hydrophobic tail is capable of interaction with grease.

A detergent works by agglomerating its molecules into micelles which dissolve the grease. Mechanic scrubbing completely eliminates the grease creating an emulsion with water.
