When you put the groceries away, you forgot to put the celery in the refrigerator. When you found it on the counter, it was soft and limp. How would osmosis help the celery? Explain what you would do and why it would work.

Respuesta :

My celery can be become fresh again through the process of osmosis by submerging it in cold water.

The movement of water molecules from a region of  high concentration of water molecules to a region with a lower concentration of water  through a selective permeable membrane is called Osmosis.

Leaving my celery on the counter caused the the plant to loose water by the process of transpiration through its guard cells making the  celery become soft and limp.

To restore the celery,

  • I will get a bowl of water (preferably cold water ) and put the celery in it for up to 30 mins or more.

  • After a while, the plant will take in water into its cells by the action of osmosis ie ( movement of water from a region of  high concentration of water molecules to a region with a lower concentration of water with the cell wall acting as a semi permeable membrane).

  • This will bring back the turgidity of the cell wall of the plant causing the celery to be crisp and fresh again.
