Taking into account the definition of solid, liquid and gaseous state, the cohesion forces in solids are strong, much greater than in liquids, which are weak, and practically non-existent in gases. This generates that the movement in gases (translation movement, rotation and vibration) is of greater intensity than in liquids (translation, rotation and vibration) and much greater in solids (only vibration).

Particles are subject to interactions or cohesion forces with others. They can be strong, weak and extremely weak, practically nonexistent.

  • Solid state

In the solid state the particles are held together by large forces that hold them together at relatively small distances. The movement of the particles is limited to being of vibration, without being able to move.

  • Liquid state

In the liquid state the forces between the particles are weaker than in the solid, making them have freedom of movement. So the particles are endowed with movements of vibration, rotation and translation. However, the particles still stay close to each other. That is why liquids take the shape of the container that contains them, occupying a fixed volume.

  • Gaseous state

In the gaseous state the forces between the particles are practically zero and they can move freely and the distance between them is much greater than in the solid and liquid states. Therefore, in the gaseous state, the particles move to any direction, occupying all the available space.

  • Summary
