The author of the article claims the people feel..." There are some people in these States who seem to think that we are not subjugated, or overpowered, or in some other way suppressed. They haggle abont adopting what is called the constitutional amendment, which means simply that, constitutionally, slavery is abolished. This question is before the Legislature of Missis- sippi and Alabama, and men in both are puzzling their poor brains in order to discover how to avoid the necessity of adopting it, or how to give it less force than that which of necessity it has. This is a folly which seems to us to be unpardonable. That amendment is one of the humiliations which the Sonth must submit to. It is as cer- tain as the approach of death or the tar-gatherer.
