IF in Petri plates, contaminated with Penicillium notatum, bacteria are dead, THEN the fungus must be inhibiting bacteria growth and killing the existing ones.
Fleming observed that in plates where the fungus was growing, there were no bacteria. He compared these plates with the other ones with no fungi and saw that on the other plates bacteria were still alive. So he assumed that Penicillium notatum was causing the death of bacteria and inhibiting their growth.
