Many writers may express annoyance at readers' insisting on the presence of symbolism in their work, even without the author meaning to use symbolism. Some writers just tell it as it is, and there is no symbolism for little things the character does. Sometimes a hat is just a hat, there is no symbolic reason as to why the main character may wear it a different way, or why they like wearing it all the time.

Say you were to write a book about a boy named Jacob, and he always wears a jacket or hoodie during the story. Your readers suggest (and insist to an annoying amount) that he wears that hoodie because he feels more comfortable in it, and he uses the jacket like a security blanket when he feels self conscious. But no, the readers are wrong. Jacob likes wearing the hoodie because it is cold. and he does not like the feeling of his arms being cold.
The readers continue to ask, or assume that they were right, that Jacob is using the hoodie as a security blanket, and you start to feel annoyed with them, because they just won't listen to you! You obviously love your readers, so you politely explain on social media that no, your character Jacob does not wear a hoodie because he is self conscious, but rather, because he is cold.
