Why might countries want to bring some issues before the international community

while trying to resolve others themselves? What kinds of issues are more likely to be

Countries take some of their problems to the international community to get support to solve these problems, as they don't have the resources to do it alone. The UN is more likely to resolve human rights issues.

We can arrive at this answer because:

  • World leaders must solve their countries' problems quickly and effectively, preventing their people from suffering.
  • However, some problems are too big for world leaders to solve with the resources that are available in the country.
  • In this case, these leaders take the problems to the international community, looking for support and help in solving the problems.

The UN, in turn, must solve problems related to the preservation of human rights, which, although not simple to solve, are better pressured by UN actions.

As recent as the 30th of June, 2017, the  UN completed its mandate in Cote d'Ivoire.

They had gone in because

  • there was a lack of state authority
  • the country had divided into half by a civil disturbance
  • about 3,000 Ivorians had died during the 2010 presidential elections and about three hundred thousand had become refugees

In order to resolve the matter,

  • the UN deployed more than 6,000 peacekeepers in2004. That number went up to nearly 12, 000 by 2011.
  • under the supervision of the UN, two presidential and legislative elections were held in addition to a referendum. This was in 2016
  • In the same year, more than 250,000 refugees were re-nationalized

This is a perfect picture of how the United Nations operates.

When the country is still relatively stable, and the rule of law still has some semblance of functionality, the UN may refrain from interfering.
