A student is selected to be the leader of a town meeting. During this meeting students freely discuss their ideas for the end of year field trip. Due to time constraints and the increased expertise required to make decisions on the various issues that matter, there has been a specialized division of labor in which politicians run for office. Politicians accept the people's mandate in elections and thus represent the public and make decisions on their behalf. Direct democracy means that the public is directly involved in decision-making, without representatives or other intermediaries.
