When the public found out about the sale there was a widespread outrage, people protested to Congressmen. Jared Irwin and U.S. Senator James Jackson led the reform efforts when Irwin was elected Governor of Georgia. It was less than two months later that he signed a bill on February 13, 1796 that revoked the Yazoo Act.

The state burned all copies of the bill except for one which had been sent to President which at the time was George Washington. Jackson resigned as Senator to run for office as next Governor of Georgia. He was elected and took office two years later.

Sadly the Yazoo act caused the border of Georgia to go within the territory of the Mississippi river and this caused a whole other problem between the two states that would go on from 1802 to 1820
