Who were the Soldiers of Buffalo? No one knows for sure why, but the soldiers of the all-Black 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments were dubbed by the Native Americans they met as "buffalo soldiers." One theory asserts that the nickname originated because the thick, curly hair of the soldiers resembled the fur of a buffalo.
