Lyric Poetry consists of a poem, such as a sonnet or an ode, that expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poet. The term lyric is now commonly referred to as the words to a song. Lyric poetry does not tell a story which portrays characters and actions. The lyric poet addresses the reader directly, portraying his or her own feeling, state of mind, and perceptions.

Lyric poetry has to do with the the poet expressing personal feelings or emotions which can be written in different forms such as:

  • An Ode
  • A Sonnet, etc

One other important feature of a lyric poem is that it does not tell a story as that is a feature of a narrative poem.

Additionally, it strictly shows the personal emotions of the poet and it is used to relate to the reader to help understand the state of mind of the poet.
