Answer:

a) Luther stated "They assume authority, and juggle before us with impudent words, saying that the Pope cannot err in matters of faith, whether he be evil or good, albeit they cannot prove it by a single letter. That is why the canon [church] law contains so many heretical and unchristian, nay unnatural, laws; but of these we need not speak now", referring to the church's belief whether an evil or a good pope is ruling the aruchdioceas no one can prove that pope is wrong or right, but have to remain silent because the Pope knows what's best.

b) ".....they imagine the Holy Ghost never leaves them, however unlearned and wicked they may be, they grow bold enough to decree whatever they like. But were this true, where were the need and use of the Holy Scriptures?....in pious souls only. If I had not read it, I could never have believed that the devil should have put forth such follies at Rome and find a following. But not to fight them with our own words, we will quote the Scriptures. St. Paul says, ‘If anything be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace’ (1 Cor. xiv. 30)." Luther believed that the Holy Spirit/ Ghost only resided in those who were pure of heart, but never left the sides of those who were wicked. Luther also referred if he. had not read the Scriptures he would not have believed that the devil would make the people of Rome sin.

c) What. Luther has stated in the passage above referring to the catholic church, he brought up ideologies such as the Pope being the head of the church meaning they know whats best, the Holy Ghost staying by everyone even the wicked, and to hold their peace by going off/stating what scriptures have told them. From 1450 to 1750 these specific ideologies have been carried out through those time, but changes were made. The ideas in this passage or Roman Catholic Church's responses to them has influenced change in the Church's council in the matter of faith, scripture, teachings, and obtaining peace around them.

Answer:

Explain ONE specific way Luther’s ideas in the passage differed from the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church.

A) The passage says that they (the Pope and the followers who don’t know if the information is correct or not) imagine the Holy Ghost never leaves; Luther then says “Let us burn them, and content ourselves with the unlearned gentlemen at Rome, in whom the Holy Ghost dwells, who, however, can dwell in pious souls only. If I had not read it, I could never have believed that the devil should have put forth such follies at Rome and find a following.” This means Luther believes the Holy Ghost sticks with wicked souls’ sides and that it is with souls that are pure. He then says that if he didn’t read the text for himself, we wouldn’t have believed that it was the devil that can make and had made the Romans sin.

Explain ANOTHER specific way in which Luther’s ideas in the passage differed from the Roman Catholic Church.

B) Lutheran in the passage states that “They assume authority, and juggle before us with impudent words, saying that the Pope cannot err in matters of faith, whether he be evil or good, albeit they cannot prove it by a single letter”, which means that the followers have to listen to the Pope, whether he is right or wrong, because they cannot read or write or read from the Bible to know if the information that’s coming from the Pope is true and reliable. They can’t question the Pope’s authority because the Pope has more power than them and are assumed to have “all of the knowledge” and be correct with the information they say to the people.

Explain how the ideas in the passage, or Roman Catholic responses to them, influenced Christianity from 1450 to 1750.

C) The ideas that Luther spread caused the Reformation to occur and made a lot of people decide to switch from being Catholic to being Protestant. The Church responded with a compromise that mostly benefited themselves and only a couple of Luther’s ideas so that they can gain back the people and political control. This didn’t work out for them because more and more people were hearing the ideas and started to read the writings and text for themselves, which would back up Luther’s claims about the Popes misleading some information and religious practices. This caused a new branch to form in Christianity, being the religion of Protestantism.
