An enzyme can be defined as a biological catalyst that typically speeds up (increases) the rate of a chemical reaction, by lowering (decreasing) the activation energy of its constituent chemical elements (reactants).  

Hence, the rate of any chemical reaction is faster when its activation energy is decreased, reduced or lowered.  

Furthermore, some of the characteristics associated with an enzyme include the following:

  • Enzyme structures (active site) are specific to the type of substrate they bond to.
  • An enzyme may or may not require cofactors.
  • The action of an enzyme in a chemical reaction may involve minerals.
  • An enzyme can be used over and over i.e continuously, for different chemical reactions.

Basically, an enzyme can be used continuously (over and over) because it is not changed by the chemical reaction.

In conclusion, an enzyme is unchanged by the chemical reaction it catalyzes (speeds up).
