Vengeance or Revenge is the main theme of this story by Alice Ruth Moore. In this story, we learn of an old woman, who in the course of vengeance lost the love of her life. His name was Bernard.
In their youthful days, they had loved each other dearly and she made sacrifices for their love. However, Bernard returned to his old love Blanche. Hurt at this, the old lady became determined to become successful in life.
She attained success and Bernard came back to seek her forgiveness. She delighted in his despair but when he rose to go after begging her, she became filled with pity and asked that he come back for she was joking.
Unfortunately, Bernard would not hear of it and that was the last time they ever met. Today, she is overcome by pity for losing her love in the course of seeking vengeance.
