One of the main characteristics that a hero can have, according to Emerson's concept of heroism, is self-confidence, that is, it is the conviction of one's own abilities and the certainty that he has the skills to solve a certain problem. We can see this characteristic in Beowulf, as he is aware of his abilities and limitations and therefore recognizes that he is capable of solving the problem that the citizens of the city were facing with Grendel. He knew that he could use his gifts to promote goodness, like a strong hero.
