Our immune system’s function is to defend our body against pathogens. Two of the most important parts of our immune system are phagocytes and lymphocytes. Our phagocytes ingest the pathogens in a process called phagocytosis. Our lymphocytes produce chemicals called antibodies which can help to kill pathogens, kill pathogens themselves or neutralise any toxins produced. Sometimes, our lymphocytes create memory cells which remember the pathogen and retain in our blood even forever in some cases, to make us immune to the disease caused by the pathogen.
