The prevailing global trends in agriuclture support the growth of monocultures, which are often seen as unsustainable. The productivity and sustianbility of annual food crops is of extreme importance for feeding an ever growing world population. In this issue we look at the negative impact of monocultures, especially of annual food crops, and at the alternatives that are being developed. As the different articles show, the time is ripe to revise old truths, as the alternatives to monocultures are proving their potential.

Monoculture is agricultural practice of producing a single crop, plant, or livestock species in a field or farming system at a time. Examples of monocultures are potatoes, corn, and soybeans. Monoculture is also seen in lawns, ornamental plants, and even forest replanted after mining or other activity. The advantages of monoculture are good for the local climate and soil conditions. But the disadvantages are planting the same crop in the same place each year zaps nutrients from the earth and leaves soil weak and it unable to support healthy plant growth.
Invasive alien species or alien plant are plants, animals, pathogens and organisms that non-native to an ecosystem, and it can cause economic or environmental harm and adversely affect human health.
Food security is a measure of the availability of food and individuals' ability to access it. It is all people, at all times that have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food which meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life.
