I'm not sure if this is what you mean but:
Churches were organized like synagogues; elders (priests) led services and instructed the converts. Assistants, or deacons, helped the sick, the poor, and almost all other people in the community who were in need of help. The elders/priests were usually like rabbis and acted more as teachers/scholars than as leaders.
