One day while shopping, Ms. Wanta Bargain picked up her 3 year old son, Somm, by his right wrist and lifted him into the shopping cart. She heard a clicking sound and Somm immediately began to cry and hold his elbow. Given that lifting the child caused a separation at the elbow, which is more likely: separation of the radius and humerus or separation of the ulna and humerus. Explain.

Answer:

The elbow joint is the point of articulation of the humerus and ulna and radius. The ulna is longer in length at its  posterior end  than the radius and  fit tightly to the humerus than the  radius. Therefore when Ms Wanta pulls the right arm of her son,the clicking sound  was likely  due to the separation of the non-tightly held radius from the humerus and the  ulna.(non-alignment). This is refers to as Nursemaid elbow or pulled elbow. And the  dislocation is common in kids because their bones are not fully  developed.
