A challenge that was faced by Black people when voting in Texas in the early 1900s was the imposition of poll taxes.
What were poll taxes?
These were fees that people had to pay in some areas of the South such as Texas, before they would be allowed to vote.
African Americans were often the target of these poll taxes because they were not economically well off and so could not afford them. It therefore blocked them from voting.
