The Sacco and Vanzetti case happened in the 1920s, both men were accused and convicted of murdering a guard and a paymaster on an armed robbery. They were electrocuted. The case got national attention because many people believed they were innocent and were only being sued because they were anarchists and defended the left-wing movement. With the rise of the anti-communist movement in America, they became targets. In 1977 the Governor of Massachusetts proclaimed that Sacco and Vanzetti did not receive a fair trial.
Sacco and Vanzetti were apprehended and tried during a period of high tension and unrest in the United States.
Anti-immigrant sentiment was exacerbated by the Bolshevik (Communist) Revolution in Russia in 1917 and World War I (the United States entered the war in 1917).
Newcomers who advocated radical ideologies like anarchism, communism, or socialism were subjected to particularly harsh prejudice.
The "Red Scare," which lasted from 1919 to 1920, was marked by several labor strikes, widespread fear of radicals, and a series of bomb attacks against government officials, including US Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer.
