Patrick Henry opposed the new government under the Constitution because it gave too little power to the states.
When the Constitutional Convention was held in 1787, Henry was initially selected as a Virginia delegate but declined to serve. He strongly opposed a stronger central authority, as he feared that the constitution would give the central government too many powers and that the office of president might become dangerously close to that of tyrant or monarch.
In addition, he argued that the states should relinquish too much of their autonomy and rights to the federal government.
Partly in response to the concerns of many anti-federalists such as Henry, the Bill of Rights was later added to the Constitution, which established some basic rights and somewhat limited the influence of the federal government over individual states.
