In the past China has fined couples that had more than one child and required that all urban couples had only one child. This was referred as the one child policy and was often enforced through forced abortions and sterilizations. The government ended the one child policy in 2015, allowing couples to have two children. China does offer maternity leave but does not subsidize daycare for large families.
