In this essay, Sally Ride uses both ethos and logos.

Ethos refers to an appeal to credibility. When using ethos, the author appeals to his credibility in order to persuade the audience to accept his argument. In this case, Sally Ride employs this rhetorical device when she says:

"Everyone I've met has a glittering, if vague, mental image of space travel. And naturally enough, people want to hear about it from an astronaut: “How did it feel?” “What did it look like?” “Were you scared?""

The author also uses logos, which is an appeal to logic. She does so when she employs logical arguments in order to persuade the readers. She employs this device in the following excerpt:

"In orbit, racing along at five miles per second, the space shuttle circles the Earth once every 90 minutes. I found that at this speed, unless I kept my nose pressed to the window, it was almost impossible to keep track of where we were at any given moment—the world below simply changes too fast."
